Resigning Gracefully

A business team shaking hands to seal a dealCongratulations! You have a new job! Now you are faced with the delicate challenge of resigning from your current employer without burning bridges, and saying good-bye to friends and colleagues. Always resign in a professional manner.

Our staff will help you write your resignation letter. Next, you need to meet with your manager. It is always best to resign in person if possible. Your manager needs to hear that your decision is firm and final, and that you are committed to your new employer. Express appreciation for the opportunities that your former employer has given you.

Be careful not to get caught in any discussions other than your resignation. If discussions begin to wander into topics like, “We were just getting ready to promote you!” or “What would it take to keep you here?” diplomatically end the conversation. Fact of the matter is these are all contrived statements to take your leverage away.

Simply remember the definition of “insanity” – Ignoring the repeated continuance of a action or behavior that repeatedly brings about the same results, yet you somehow are expected to believe a different outcome will miraculously be achieved! INSANITY!

Industry surveys prove that 83% of the people that accept a counteroffer regret doing so in less than 6 months. Conversely, you are now no longer considered in the same light as you had previously been. Your employer is now suspicious and now has time to locate a suitable replacement for you on their terms.

First and foremost the environment, management, atmosphere and financial situations are not going to permanently change just for you. Your best course of action is to continue without hesitation and embrace the next opportunity and challenges that you feel best ensure your personal and professional development for the long term.
